Conference Theme: Sustaining Enduring Expeditionary Helicopter Operations Sustaining enduring expeditionary operations is placing temendous strains on battlefield helicopter fleets. There is a constantly increasing tempo of operations, in harsh environmental conditions and extremes of the flying envelopes, over extended and complex supply chains, often supported with austere facilities. Supporting these operations over many years is a problem that needs to be collectively addressed. Whether they are new aircraft, or older where we are extending their lives, all are flying at extreme rates and have been heavily modified to meet the conditions of the theatres. The latest technology is being added to platforms for communications, protection and performance, with similar advances being made in support areas. This, coupled with the need to constantly provide freshly trained air and ground crew to deliver the 24 hour a day output, adds to the complexity of sustaining these enduring operations.  Additionally, we need to maintain peacetime standards of airworthiness and safety. Each Nation provides its own, often specifically modified, aircraft to their own flying and support arrangements, yet on some battlefields we each operate the same generic types such as Apache and Chinook. Can we achieve greater integration as well as interoperability? Heli Power 2008 will bring together experts to inform and debate the challenges of sustaining and operating battlefield helicopters in these demanding situations and some of the successes where technology has provided a solution.
