Mi-26 lifts Chinook in Afghanistan

The Netherlands Ministry of Defence has hired in a Russian Mi-26 to airlift a CH-47 Chinook damaged in a hard landing.

The accident happened on October 13 in the Uruzgan region of Afghanistan damaging the aircraft and leaving it unable to
fly.

The Mi-26 lifted the Chinook and flew it to Kandahar air field and was escorted by a pair of Apaches.

This salvage operation was carried out in close cooperation between the crew of the Mi-26 and the Dutch Joint Support Detachment, which coordinates the deployment of the helicopter. The MI-26 hired is normally used for transporting freight between Kandahar Air Field and Camp Holland in Tarin Kowt and Camp Hadrian in Deh Rawod.

The aircraft is owned by a Russian company and is flown by a Russian crew.
